MOSCOW – August 17, 2004 – RUSAL, one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, today launched an investment programme to equip all potrooms at Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter with point feeders (special alumina feeding devises). This programme is part of the larger $270 mln. modernization programme at Krasnoyarsk, due to be completed by 2007.
The installation of point feeders will reduce emissions (particularly, fluoride compounds and dust) by 15-20%, and will raise the cells' productivity by 1.5%. It will also improve energy consumption efficiency and stabilize the technological process during smelting. The point feeders will reduce the frequency of anode effects by a factor of four, which is crucial in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The installation of point feeders at Krasnoyarsk is due to be completed by 2007 and will cost over $30 mln. The point feeders are a development of RUSAL's Engineering and Technological Center, which was created last year as part of the company's drive to invest in its technological base.
