Today Alexey Miller, Chairman of Gazprom’s Management Committee took part in the solemn commissioning ceremony for a new combined cycle gas turbine unit #11 PGU-450T at Mosenergo’s CHP-21.

Also participating in the event were representatives of RAO UES of Russia, the Moscow Government as well as top managers of Mosenergo.

“Today Gazprom has taken another step aimed at boosting the reliability of heat and power supply to the Moscow region’s consumers and providing a stable energy platform for economic expansion in the capital of Russia.

The launch of a state-of-the-art CCGT unit gives ordinary citizens and industrial consumers of the Moscow city extra confidence that the obligations assumed by Gazprom with regard to securing reliable operation of both the Moscow and Russian power sectors will be fulfilled. Meeting these obligations is a pillar of Gazprom’s energy strategy,” said Alexey Miller.

Background:

The commissioning of the CCGT unit #11 at CHP-21 is another stage in the Development and Technical Upgrading Program being implemented by the Company. So far, this is the second CCGT unit taken into operation by Mosenergo over the last year as part of the Program. The new unit will enable to supply electricity and heat to over 100 thousand apartments in the Northwest and Central Districts of Moscow as well as the town of Khimki.

The electric capacity of the CCGT unit accounts for 450 MW, heat capacity – 300 Gcal/h. The unit utilizes a combined power generation cycle. This technology considerably improves operational performance of a generating unit versus units operating based on the conventional steam-power cycle. In particular, efficiency increases from 38 to 51 per cent, fuel consumption declines 30 per cent and pollutant atmospheric emissions reduce threefold.

The construction of the CCGT unit #11 at CHP-21 commenced on March 16, 2006. Mosenergoproekt and Mosenergospetsremont, Mosenergo’s subsidiaries, acted as the designer and general contractor respectively. Turbine equipment for the unit was manufactured by Power Machines, boiler equipment – by the Podolsk Machine-Building Plant and transformer equipment – by Electrozavod.

The power generating company Mosenergo includes 17 power stations with 10.6 MW of installed electric capacity and 39 thousand MW of heat capacity. Mosenergo’s power plants supply 75 per cent of Moscow’s demand for heat power and 85 per cent of Moscow and the Moscow region’s demand for electric power. Gazprom is the major shareholder of Mosenergo.
