Kaliningradskaya TETs-2 sets new environmental policy

Kaliningrad, November 14, 2007.  Kaliningradskaya TETs-2 introduced new environmental policy based on RAO UES of Russia Environmental Policy Implementation Plan. This was done in order to improve the plant’s environmental management system, thus bringing it in compliance with the requirements of the international standard ISO 14001: 2004. After receiving a certificate the enterprise will be able to strengthen its competitiveness on both home and foreign power markets and increase its capitalization. Besides, as a result the company will become more attractive for investors.

As a major power producer in Kaliningrad region, Kaliningradskaya TETs-2 has always paid great attention to environmental protection and safety.

Kaliningradskaya TETs-2 uses the latest steam gas technologies. As compared to steam power ones, steam gas technologies provide more fuel economy (about 20-25%). This helps to reduce air pollution by one third. As far as environmental performance is concerned, Kaliningradskaya TETs-2 is one of the most advanced power plants in Russia.

-The concentration of nitrogen oxides in combustion gases is five times lower than the maximum permissible concentration for energy enterprises.

-In order to ensure sewage purification sewage treatment facilities were constructed at Kaliningradskaya TETs-2 industrial site. These facilities have treatment capacity of 200 cubic meters per day and include biological post-treatment system.

-Kaliningradskaya TETs-2 also has treatment facilities for purification of pollution-free industrial and storm sewage which include two installations with treatment capacity of 20 l/s each.

-Purification of oil-contaminated sewage from the industrial site is done using treatment facilities with treatment capacity of 100 cubic meters per hour.

The plant strictly observes environmental requirements imposed by the Russian legislation.

Introduction of new environmental policy helps to strengthen control over implementation of environmental measures, ensure energy saving and efficient use of natural resources. Environmental policy in the electric power industry becomes scientifically verified, which leads to reduction of both production and consumption waste. Special measures are taken to reduce pollutant emissions. The plant seeks to better use water recourses and to ensure environmental transparency of its operation.
